About the Foundation

The Bayview Hunters Point Foundation for Community Improvement, Inc. is a non-profit community-based human services agency founded in 1971. The Foundation was created to address the needs of a predominantly African American, isolated community where essential social services such as legal assistance, drug rehabilitation, and mental health care were unavailable. Programs have now expanded to respond to San Francisco’s diverse communities and client populations and include substance abuse and mental health treatment, youth services, violence prevention/intervention and HIV/AIDS support services. Many of the Foundation’s services are offered citywide. The services provided by the Foundation demonstrate a concern for community issues as well as the ability to meet community needs.

Welcome Message from the President

On behalf of the Board of Directors for the BVHPFCI, I would like to welcome you to the Bayview Hunters Foundation for Community Improvement.

The BVHPFCI, Inc is a non-profit community-based human services agency founded in 1971. The Foundation was created to address the needs of a predominantly African American isolated community where essential social services such as legal assistance, drug and alcohol rehabilitation, and mental care were unavailable.

Currently, the Foundation’s three main service areas include:

  • Substance Abuse Treatment
  • Mental Health Services
  • Youth Services

Funding for these services is provided by the City and County of San Francisco’s Department of Public Health.

The Foundation has a staff of approximately 62 dedicated and committed professionals providing program services and administrative support. The 55 full and part-time Program staff includes physicians, nurses, LVNs, counselors, psychiatrists, psychologists, medical records technicians, billing/intake staff, social workers, administrative support and program directors. Together, this dedicated staff is responsible for serving about 1,100 clients annually and generating some 94,000 units of service unit for fiscal year 2007.

Also, we are proud to be a partner in the Southeast Partnership for Health Center of Excellence working to eliminate a variety of health disparities including HIV from the community. Our partners include: Black Coalition on AIDS; Maxine Hall Health Center; Southeast Health Center; USCF Men of Color Program; and Westside Community Services.

It is the intent of the BVHPFCI Board of Directors to continue the legacy started by Ernest Mitchell back in 1971 and to continue building and reshaping the Foundation to meet the needs of its diverse community so that we can build a community that is empowered, clean, fit and healthy.

A Message from the Executive Director

“The task before us, if we would not perish, is to shake off our ancient prejudices and build the earth.” — Pierre Teilhard de Chardin

The history of Bayview Hunter’s Point is full of examples of people deciding that where they had been was not going to determine where they were going. Whether it was African-Americans risking a move from the south to the Bay Area to work during Would War II, a Chinese family tenaciously trying to hold on to their fishing livelihood in the midst of government appropriation of their land, or the Latino immigrant who stakes their future on the taco restaurant they opened on Third Street, Bayview Hunter’s Point has held the promise of a new way to live.

Today as the community re-appropriates its historic diversity the mission of The Foundation remains a steadfast anchor to which people can cling during change and from which they can receive the support services they need to insure their good health and improved quality of life. In our specific substance abuse and mental health work and in the collaborations in which The Foundation participates, the Board and staff are committed to an empowered community where hope is more than a word and love is more than a cliché.

I am honored to serve this community and invite you to look carefully at this web site to get a better idea of the full scope of our services. I also invite to you to join us in our efforts to confirm Bayview Hunter’s Point as a great neighborhood in which live and work.

Jacob K. Moody, M.Div., MSW
Executive Director
